Childbirth Education (and some other stuff)

Eric and I are creating a "business plan" for our endeavor ... we are both pretty excited. We've decided to go with Bradley, and the training workshop is in Chicago in September. Hopefully we can get signed up and send off our application before the end of the month. I looked at other organizations, but I feel like I should start with something I know first, and something that I truly believe in and have experienced myself.

Most likely, I will be starting a new blog for that business (we've already thought of a clever name that's not taken!) and this one will go back to being just family stuff. I realize that I will need to 'tone down' my rants on a blog about birth if it's actually for a business. Don't want to scare people away. One of the main things I will have to focus on, when the time comes, is finding a place to hold classes. I don't want to use our house because of the cats. Ideally, I will finish some of the work before the workshop, and finish my provisional classes and the rest of the work before March or April of next year.

We have potatoes from our garden! They are not huge, but we are excited that we have some. Our broccoli plant (we planted several, but only have one growing an actual floret because of the blasted caterpillars) is getting bigger, and we have lots of zucchini growing. I'll try to get pictures soon.

I visited the Parent Teacher Store (and Toys, too) yesterday and bought 2 sets of flashcards - one is "animals"  (that has colors on the opposite side) and the other is "ABC." Duncan thinks they are all hilarious and loves it when I show them to him. This morning during breakfast, we went through the ABC ones. On one side are pictures of an item - ball, for example - the word below it, and then the letter that it begins with at the top. On the opposite side are more items that begin with that letter. On a few of the cards, I said, "Duncan, can you point to the sheep?" and he pointed to it!!! I was pretty excited. I now completely understand how parents get so excited when their children learn, and even more excited when their children succeed. Anyone have tips to encourage Duncan to say the words besides repetition?

Along that same note, Eric and I had another discussion about Duncan's education this weekend ... my feeling is that the more "effort" (aka moo-lah in some cases) we put in at the beginning, the more likely he is to succeed and get scholarships. He said that I made a good point, and I smiled because it is rare that he says that to me. I shouldn't feel 'inferior' to him because we both have the same level of education, but sometimes I do feel that way because ultimately he gets to make all the monetary decisions (regardless of how much I fight for it) because he's the one making the money. Ultimately, I usually end up with agreeing with him, and he knows that, so that's why he argues (and it's not really arguing - just discussing) the way that he does. He's the practical one and I'm the optimistic one. He refuses to say, "Well, it will be okay because of this and this and this," while I always say things like that.

In the end, though, I wouldn't have it any other way. We balance each other perfectly.

You should go to the training in Dallas in December and bring Duncan and we can watch him during the day:o)

We'd thought about that, but decided against it because Chicago is closer, I won't really have any "extra" days because of my obligation to take care of Landon, and training is 14 hours a day for 3 days ... so there won't be any extra time to do anything. Plus, we don't really want to wait until December.

We're banking on my parents taking care of him, but we haven't worked out any details. We haven't even mentioned it to them, really, because we started thinking about doing this after they already left for their vacations.
