Something I've learned

Life will never be worry free - EVER. So, what's a mommy to do? You research, you talk to friends and family, and you make the best choice that you can for your child, even if others disagree with you.

I was reminded of this at Duncan's 1-year checkup this morning. Ah, vaccinations. A worldwide debate that will probably always be surrounded by controversy. From my view, there are 2 main schools of thought here. The first is: "I was vaccinated as a child, and I'm fine, so my child will be vaccinated, too." The second is: "Vaccines are pointless and my child doesn't need them, especially since I'm going to be around to protect them." Maybe that second one isn't totally PC, but a lot of my friends belong to the "Holistic Parenting" group in Louisville, and their kids are not vaccinated at all.

Me? I think I'm in between. I believe in "prepare and prevent," not "repair and repent (you can thank Sherry at my Weight Watchers meetings for that one)." So, Duncan received his vaccinations this morning, and I feel good about it.

Last night we finished watching "Pregnant In America." If you're pregnant and have not seen this, I HIGHLY recommend it! This, along with "Food, Inc." and are my two favorite documentaries.

Ah, the great vaccination debate. I think every parent now thinks and worries about it. While I think there may be some wisdom in a modified schedule, it's absolutely more terrifying to not vaccinate (in my opinion). It's not just the kids whose parents choose to not vaccinate who are at risk, but all the other kids too as vaccines aren't always 100% effective.

An interesting article I read a few months ago on the subject: http://www.wired.com/magazine/2009/10/ff_waronscience/

Just my thoughts-- I know there are a lot out there and I don't mean any of this to be inflammatory. Just sharing thoughts.

I added your blog to my late night, breastfeeding iPod Touch blog roll by the way. Duncan is so cute! He looks just like you!

I think that there is somewhere in the middle that is gaining ground. It's the alternate schedule crowd, and the group in which we belong. Kellen will be vaccinated (except for HepB since I wasn't giving my newborn a vaccine for an STD); he just won't be vaccinated on the APA schedule. Other than his MMR, we will be completely caught up by age 2.
