July 4

Was so nice to have Eric off today, though we've had a fairly lazy day. Duncan and I had a short date to the grocery this morning. It was the first time I've ever used one of those carts with the big cars on the front ... those suckers are hard to maneuver, especially on Senior Discount Day ... hello, first Wednesday of the month!
Violet seemed to feel better this morning, so that's great news, but Duncan went to bed tonight with a fever, so he's all oiled up now, too. Of COURSE I've run out of OnGuard now that I need it, and I haven't needed it in several months. Oh well. Violet was really fussy this morning, so we put her down for a nap around 10:00 and woke up her up around 11:30 for fear that she wouldn't take an afternoon nap. Duncan went down for his nap at 1:00 and Violet just ... never slept. We headed to our friend's house at 5:00 for their 4th of July party, enjoyed some socialization, and Eric brought Violet home for bed a little before 6:00. Duncan asked to go home around 6:30, which I thought was odd, but assumed it was because there were so many people there - he tends to get overwhelmed in crowds. We relaxed at home until bedtime, and when we put him to bed, he had a fever of 100.2. We'll see what the night brings. He never said he felt bad, but looking back at the day, I should have seen it coming.
I have fond memories of the 4th of July as a child. One of the best is when we went to the Ft. Worth Botanical Gardens for a concert (1993 maybe?), along with the few times we went to Tom Sawyer park in Louisville when we were here for vacation. Once we moved to Louisville, we didn't really do much, but I do remember going to the Waterfront a few times after high school. I also love watching the Boston Pops ... I pretty much grew up with John Williams (who directed them before Keith Lockhart), so they'll always be nostalgic for me.
Aaaaand commence the loud fireworks. I hope I can enjoy the 4th of July again at some point. Maybe when I'm not worried about the fireworks waking my kids up anymore. Maybe Eric's right - we really are old fogeys sometimes!
