I'm a Daddy!

It's still sinking in, and at times it seems overwhelming but it is such a great feeling to look at little Duncan and know that I am responsible for turning him into a valued member of society. Of course I'm thinking WAY down the line here. But in the time being I can give him all the love I can, while still sparing a bit for momma too ;)

What we have learned today. We were schooled on cleaning his cord properly. I guess they did that in the nursery at the hospital, so our in home nurse showed us how to get deep down in there. It was REALLY nasty in there and starting to get stinky. So hopefully with continued proper care and some time we can keep Duncan from needing a shot to keep it healing. Shame on Norton! Of course, we should have asked too but it was the last thing on our minds at the time.

We learned that babies go through growth spurts like mad. We were eating full meals on the hour for about 5 hours last night. It was really hard on Katherine I know, so she and baby are sleeping now. And just like that, he went back to regular 2-3 hour feedings. His body knows what is best for him and we will keep supplying his needs so long as we can figure out what they are. We had our last in home nurse visit today, to take one last Bilirubin blood sample. Duncan is back up to 1 ounce below birth weight (9-6), and in only 6 days. He's on route to be a chunky baby like his daddy was!

Everyone has been sleeping since about 2. Duncan got fussy and I changed his wet diaper and for I think the first time was able to calm him back down to a sleep and he has been dreaming ever since. Almost brings a tear to your eye...but I'll save that gushy stuff for another time. But seriously, Katherine can always provide him comfort during his feedings and with some skin to skin sleep time, but for us Daddies I think it can be hard to develop that important bond with baby. So knowing that I can comfort him when needed is an amazing feeling. I'll leave it at that.

During their naps I have been uber productive. Checked work emails...nothing major on the front, except starting a new job while in the middle of paternity leave. wOOt! Also did the dishes and put them away, got a bunch of cards in the mail (Thank you Marianne! GMA and GPA and work folks, and anyone else I have forgotten..And Kristina too), started some laundry, took stuff downstairs and cleaned the litter boxes, straightened up the bedroom that we haven't slept in for 3 days, took a shower and gotten a bunch of garbage out of the house. Pretty good for one dose of Pepsi.

This is getting long so I will stop here. Baby is restless and will be getting up soon, so need to prepare mentally..haha. Just kidding. It isn't that bad at all...
